Have you ever found yourself wondering if your artwork is ever going to be ‘finished‘, or maybe you are constantly second guessing whether it’s even good enough to show anyone else…
If you have, let’s dive into what are the most common issues we all face when it comes to ‘finishing’ our artwork.
Creativity is a deeply personal journey and one that often takes us through a maze of emotions. Including excitement, frustration, and, perhaps most significantly, uncertainty. This uncertainty can manifest in various ways: questioning if a piece is truly finished, keep adding to it until it is overworked, or wondering if it’s good enough to share with others.
It’s a struggle that we all face at some point in our lives.
I myself, have many pieces hanging in my personal studio that I feel are just not finished, so they hang there. I will take them down and work on them when inspiration hits and I know, in that moment, I am feeling my way through my work. It is important to remember that it’s not just the result, the final piece of art, but the process, the time you spend doing what you love and your own feelings that matter most.
Perfectionism The Enemy Of Creativity
Oh, trying to be perfect! We keep tweaking, adjusting, and fiddling with our work, in the hope that we can make it flawless.
But here’s the thing…
When it comes to art, there is no such thing as “perfect”. Art is subjective, so what may appear as perfect to one person could feel soulless to someone else. The most important thing is how you feel when you look at your art. If it speaks to your soul, you will a huge smile on your face.
After all, you create because you enjoy it and it makes you feel happy. Perfectionism isn’t the only hurdle you can face as an artist though, you may also get caught up with some Creative Chaos along the way…
Embrace The Creative Chaos
The creative journey itself matters just as much as the destination (perhaps even more). Trust me, there will be and likely have been times when you feel you are caught up in the most complex maze with dead ends at every turn.
Don’t be afraid of the chaos – that’s where the magic happens.
Embrace it! It’s when you’re doubting and experimenting that you will find your way through the “ugly” phase into something perfectly imperfect. I love the energy that flows through me as I work, will everything come out truly amazing first time? No! And I am happy about that. Think how boring art would become for you if you just made the perfect piece every time… that’s not the relationship I want – I live off the need to embrace the chaos in life.
Sharing Your Art Work
I want you to imagine you’ve just finished pouring your heart onto the canvas, and now it’s Judgement Day.
We all crave a little pat on the back, right?
But here’s the thing: not everyone speaks the same language when it comes to art. Some folks might not fully grasp what you’re expressing, and guess what? That’s perfectly okay! We’re all on different stops of our creative journey, after all. Now, to get that much-needed support, why not dive into groups where fellow artists with a vibe similar to yours hang out?
Whether it’s signing up to an online group on Facebook or joining me and my lovely team for one of our Adult Art Classes, you’ll find a super supportive space. Don’t let the fear of criticism or indifference cramp your creative style. Share your work when you’re good and ready, and remember: no one’s opinion defines your awesomeness. Your art has its audience; you just got to let it shine!
The Time to Unleash Your Inner Artist is Now
Feeling a bit unsure about your artwork is all part of this wild creative journey. Trust those instincts of yours and soak in every emotion that comes your way.
After all, if we shut out the “negative” feels, we might miss the sweet taste of the positive ones. Your creative time is YOUR time—for your well-being and as a way to let those emotions out. What blossoms from this journey is a beautiful, authentic piece of art that screams “YOU,” and that’s downright magical.
Keep experimenting, keep believing in yourself, and most importantly, enjoy the adventure!
